Gloucester City Hockey Club

Gloucester City Hockey Club, with over 100 years of history, had untapped potential and a strong national women’s side, but the men’s programme lagged behind. Governance structures were unclear, membership lacked diversity, and community engagement was weak. The club risked drifting into irrelevance, despite surface-level stability.

Appointed as Chair, we led a three-year, values-driven transformation strategy:

• Reinstated a Charter of Excellence to guide behaviour and ambition.
• Overhauled governance for transparency and decisiveness.
• Rebalanced competitive priorities across men’s, women’s and youth teams.
• Built pathways into the club from local schools and underrepresented communities.
• Created a culture of high performance and high belonging.

• Club entered the top 10 percent nationally by membership.
• Strengthened identity and commercial proposition pre-COVID.
• Weathered the pandemic with stability and resilience.
• Established a leadership handover built on continuity, culture and long-term growth.
